Choosing the right materials is essential. It affects so many aspects of the whole design process that you should focus your research on:
2. Material properties
Every material is unique due to their
individual properties and whilst they may not
have every property you need, you can select
those that suit your needs most.
Prior research is so beneficial in gaining
some understanding before you start to test,
experiment and model.
Properties to research - strength, weight,
colour, texture, working properties, ease of
use, cost, durability, malleability, ductility,
flexibility etc
1. Meeting your specification -
ACCESS FM
Your specification sets out what you want
your product to be.Your material choices are
a major factor in meeting this as they will
need to consider the appearance, cost,
customer preferences, the intended
surroundings, safety, size (as the form of the
material will affect this) and how you intend
to make your product.
Only you know your own preference and confidence when working with specific materials. Consider
your experience of the materials once you have limited your options so that you happy with your
final choices.
Industrial/product designers use their creative design, craft and engineering skills to design and shape products of almost any sort, from domestic appliances to automobiles and aircraft. The work can involve making improvements to existing products, or designing, modelling, testing and producing prototypes of brand new products. Either way, industrial/product designers must have a thorough understanding of materials, production processes and the potential market for the products under consideration at any time.
